ambilocus

   The title of this work, “Ambilocus”, is a compound word consisting of the Latin word “ambi” meaning “periphery” and “locus” meaning “place”. If we define art as the trace left behind inside a picture frame or a given space, then “Ambilocus” can not be called art, as it does not fall under this definition. In this work, Sasahara used a concrete wall and the space of a former woodwork warehouse. This work consists of a wooden picture frame attached to an old concrete wall, “a wall worn out by time”, with the surrounding wall painted white, leaving only the inside of the frame untouched, so that the original wall inside the picture frame resembled an abstract painting. Sasahara did not concentrate on creating something inside a picture frame, but rather on transforming an everyday object into an art piece so that we can look at something old with fresh eyes.

　本作のタイトルであるambilocusは、ラテン語のambi＝周辺と、locus=場所、の複合語である。アートというものが額縁や空間など、あるフレーム内におきた出来事の痕跡であるとした場合、本作は全くもってアートとは言えないだろう。本作では、コンクリートブロックの壁や、ギャラリー空間の倉庫など「時代を積み重ねてきた壁」に直接額縁を取り付け、その周りをペンキで白く塗り、あたかも抽象的な絵画が飾られているようなインスタレーションを制作した。私は、通常作品となるはずの額縁の中になにも手を施さず、目の前にある「いつも見ているもの」を作品化させるため、作家として壁を白く塗ったのである。
